Thanks for the detailed report and the reproduction through `JsonDeserializationSchema.deserialize(byte[])`. Since you are willing to submit a PR, please open one that includes the four new tests covering the 16 invalid input/mode combinations so maintainers can confirm the failures on current dev. The proposed scope sounds right: validate the ARRAY/MAP node shape before conversion and route mismatches through the existing parse-error policy (fail when `ignore-parse-errors=false`, null when it is true), while leaving positional-array ROW conversion, valid values and configuration names/defaults unchanged.
