`as if the UART I/O procedure itself interferes with other lock operations.` I think that is likely. As RP2040 suffers from glitchy and bad UART. Both on USB and HW UART. This issue also appeared on the STM32H7, where turning on SYSLOG debug causes crashes. Suspicious... It might be worth looking into that.
