Hmm.. Actually, now that I think about it worst case is 2(X+10)ms lost writes, 
as we only sync() those segments that were active when we started the sync(), 
so we could have X+10ms writes backed up, plus the proceeding X+10ms of new 
writes that will come in before we realise we're stuffed.
