The Sidecar server currently supports both Java 8 and Java 11. The official end
of public updates for Java 8 was in January 2019. However, commercial support
is available.
I propose deprecating Java 8 support for the following reasons:
- EOL for public updates as of January 2019
- Many dependencies do not receive updates for Java 8 builds for multiple years
and we are stuck on old dependency versions.
- Inability to upgrade dependencies poses a security risk if a vulnerability is
discovered in any of the libraries.
- Better align with the newer versions of Cassandra where only Java 11 and Java
17 are supported.
- Sidecar is built on top of vert.x, the next major version of vert.x will drop
support for Java 8.
