My inquiry was only the curious thought of how we should ideally set these
things up so that branches remain buildable and testable over time, and changes
that are specific to branches are better encapsulated to them (e.g. in-tree). I
didn't mean to imply that anything need be made blocking or needed to be done
in this issue.

i'm a bit confused as to why CASSANDRA-17885 doesn't fix this …?
