Took initial patch as the base and pushed it a bit further

Also used this as an opportunity to clean up some recently added but sub-clean
code. While it doesn't go as far as I'd like to, it's something.
P.S. If I see another list of maps of strings to strings used internally to
marshal objects, and not just at the edge, to format for JMX, I'm going to cut
someone with a plastic spoon.
