We are trying out "Guide on the Side." We use a virtual private server for our website, and it works fine. I don't see anything in the requirements that says you need a dedicated server. We tried it out on one of our shared-hosting sites and it works fine there, too. The installation does require you to run some command-line php commands, so you need ssh access.
