The University of Prince Edward Island is one of Canada’s leading liberal 
undergraduate institutions. Located in Charlottetown on the unceded land of the 
Mi’kmaq Nation, of the Wabanaki Confederacy, in the traditional district of 
Epekwitk, UPEI is a central educational, cultural and social institution in the

over 90 countries, the University is best described as a research-intensive 
primarily undergraduate university, offering traditional programs, professional 
programs, and interdisciplinary opportunities.

Reporting to the University Librarian, the successful applicant will:

Manage the Cataloguing Unit, supervising the work of Library Technicians 
performing copy-cataloguing, batch record updates, and some original cataloguing
Steward the accuracy, completeness, and appropriateness of metadata in the 
Library's catalogue system (currently Evergreen), including:
maintenance of the electronic resource collections in the ILS including owned 
books and, at the present time, subscription or otherwise non-perpetually 
licensed content,
original metadata work in collaboration with the Special Collections Librarian 
relating to the library’s collections of PEI- and Lucy Maud Montgomery-related 
materials,
provide statistics and other reports from the metadata as needed for internal 
and external stakeholders


Perform original cataloguing for a variety of item types (text, music, film, 
cartographic) on a variety of media (print books, CDs, VHS, DVD, vinyl, etc. as 
well as electronic).
Provide metadata services for digital collections that harmonize metadata 
policies, standards and practices, as well as leveraging non-traditional 
information sources (e.g. full text) in enhancing discovery,
Design and provide documentation, training, and consultation on creation and 
application of metadata in the Library
Make recommendations regarding metadata policies, terminology, and practices 
from a decolonial framework.
Manage metadata/cataloguing related projects
Participate in library liaison duties including activities related to 
information literacy instruction, delivering specialized information services, 
individual research consultations, public service desk shifts, collections 
development, and preparing library reports for accreditation and academic 
program reviews.
Participate in library, university, regional, and national committees and 
organizations as relevant.

Required Qualifications

Master of Library and Information Science (or equivalent) from an 
ALA-accredited institution is required.
Experience working in an Integrated Library System or Library Services Platform 
(UPEI currently uses Evergreen ILS)
Knowledge of library and archival standards and principles (RDA, IFLA-LRM, LCC, 
LCSH, LCGFT, DDC, MARC21, BIBFRAME, RAD, EAD, etc.)
Knowledge of metadata standards and vocabularies (Dublin Core, MODS, OCLC-FAST, 
AAT, GeoNames, Wikidata, etc.)
Demonstrated ability to leverage technology to solve problems
Demonstrated ability to manage projects
Superior written and spoken communication skills

Desirable Qualifications

Experience working in a digital asset management system (UPEI currently uses 
Islandora)
Experience remediating large sets of metadata using tools such as Open Refine 
and MarcEdit
Experience with SQL and python
Experience with linked open data standards, systems and formats (RDF, JSON-LD, 
SKOS, OWL, SPARQL, schema.org, Wikidata etc.)

The position is part of the UPEI Faculty Association Bargaining Unit #1 and is 
expected to be filled at the Rank of Librarian II. The appointment will be 
effective as soon as possible until June 30, 2023.
