Wikibase, Docker, and You: Getting started with a local Wikibase instance

Instructor: Jim Hahn, Head of Metadata Research, University of Pennsylvania

Abstract: This session will provide a general introduction to getting Wikibase
-- the software that powers Wikidata -- up and running on your local
desktop/laptop running Docker. Session leader will demo using Docker Desktop
for Mac, though installation is possible on Docker Desktop for Windows and
Linux Docker Engine-Community (https://docs.docker.com/get-docker/).

The session includes a simple introduction to using Docker on your desktop,
followed by a necessary (though not overly technical) delineation of the
technology stack that makes up Wikibase.

After we have walked through the installation steps, the last half of the hour
will be reserved for independent work, question and answer time, and general
troubleshooting for your newly installed Wikibase instance!

The event organizers are looking forward to our session on Friday! It will help
if you are able to download and install docker desktop previous to the session
Friday:https://www.docker.com/products/docker-desktop. Several of the install
steps for Friday are heavily inspired by the Wikibase docker compose
documentation here:
https://github.com/wmde/wikibase-docker/blob/master/README-compose.md. Reading
the docker compose documentation is optional; it provides a nice outline for
the ordering of select install steps.

The LD4 Wikibase Working Hour (
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LD4_Wikidata_Affinity_Group/Wikibase_and_WBStack_Working_Hours
) seeks to create a space for GLAM professionals experimenting with
Wikibase/WBStack implementation, the software that Wikidata is based on, to
learn collaboratively and share tips, tools, and resources.
