Job Description

Wellesley College seeks a knowledgeable, forward-looking, team-oriented 
Cataloging & Metadata Librarian to support user discovery of library 
resources at Wellesley College and beyond.  The Cataloging & Metadata 
Librarian makes the Library’s collections accessible through the description 
and intellectual organization of these collections, following current standards 
and best practices for cataloging and metadata.

Wellesley College is a private, nonprofit liberal arts college for women 
founded in 1870. With its rich mix of print, media, and online resources, the 
Library provides access to one of the finest undergraduate collections in the 
country.

Key responsibilities

As a member of the Library Collections team, performs original and 
copy-cataloging in a wide variety of languages and formats. Applies current 
standards, including RDA and MARC 21; utilizes controlled vocabularies, 
including Library of Congress authorities and other thesauri, and Library of 
Congress classification; follows best practices in specialized cataloging, such 
as rare materials, music, and audiovisual media.

Sets cataloging practice and priorities and manages workflows for cataloging 
print, media, and electronic resources. Serves as a point of contact for vendor 
services related to cataloging/authority control, resource discovery, and the 
integrated library system (ILS). Serves as the operational contact for 
institutional partners such as EAST and HathiTrust.

In collaboration with the Systems Librarian, maintains proper functioning of 
the ILS and other library systems and platforms, including the link resolver, 
discovery layers, and digital collections platforms; ensures the ILS’s ongoing 
operability in response to changes in MARC standards that affect record 
loading, indexing for search, and display of catalog records.

Maintains and continuously improves the overall quality of records in the 
library catalog. Generates bibliographic and holdings data from the library 
catalog to support the work of collection development.

Working with the Assistant Director for Discovery Services, organizes digital 
assets in the College’s institutional repository and other platforms, and 
contributes to the creation and ongoing maintenance of digital collections 
metadata.

Required qualifications

Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent.

3-5 years’ experience as a cataloger in a library (academic preferred).

Broad understanding of the mission of higher education and the required support 
of library resources. 

Ability to catalog materials at a high level of productivity in a variety of 
languages and formats, including rare books and manuscripts in Special 
Collections. Deep knowledge of content/format standards and best practices in 
cataloging/metadata.

Ability to manage MARC record sets for large e-resource collections, and to 
load MARC records into the catalog from multiple vendors.

A commitment to access, equity, diversity, and inclusion through remediation of 
institutional biases inherent in cataloging and metadata. 

Strong communication skills. Ability to work independently, as well as 
collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred qualifications

Experience cataloging music.

Experience adding content and metadata to an institutional repository, 
preferably Islandora.

Familiarity with MODS and other metadata schemas.

Facility using Excel and Google apps.
