The library supports research and study by housing an extensive network of scholarly materials in many formats. The library offers an extensive reference and research service and holds a local collection of about 400,000 print items, journal subscriptions, sound recordings, videos and films, a leisure reading collection, special research and archival collections. Your opportunity: Working in the Digital Scholarship Unit (DSU), you will work in collaboration with technical librarians and other technical staff, such as Information and Instructional Technology Services (IITS), on digital scholarships projects. You will be responsible for providing quality resources and technical expertise to the Library's DSU by researching, designing, developing and implementing the digital library technology stack to support various digital scholarship and research projects, including: digital collections; websites publishing scholarly research; data processing and visualization, data preservation, text analysis, metadata development, and other scholarly initiatives. You will also regularly participate and contribute to technical staff meetings and software community discussions; meetings for open source projects; and assist staff with research projects by envisioning and implementing computing solutions and keeping abreast of current and upcoming computer technologies. Your responsibilities will include: Writing complex technical code Designing, testing, and modifying programming code Analyzing and writing programming code structures based on user requirements Evaluating programming code to ensure it is valid, compatible, and meets appropriate standards Developing technical application implementation plans Creating complex and technical documentation and user support guides Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists Essential Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in computer science or an equivalent combination of education and experience Minimum four years' related work experience Experience with application development in at least one major programming language (e.g. PHP) Demonstrated experience with XML, XSLT, web services protocols, HTML, CSS and JavaScript Solid programming skills are required with a demonstrated aptitude for designing and developing innovative programming solutions and acquiring knowledge of new programming tools Demonstrated experience and ability to work with Unix/Linux systems, including system administration, shell scripting and data storage management Experience with code management systems such as SVN or GitHub Excellent oral and written communication skills Sound problem-solving skills, organizational skills and ability to manage projects Applicants are expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment Assets (Nonessential): Experience developing, designing and provisioning web-based scholarly resources Experience working with version control; working with test-driven development and continuous integration techniques Familiarity with Digital Asset Management frameworks such as Islandora, Fedora and Drupal Experience with online collaboration tools in an educational setting Knowledge and experience of digital library technologies, metadata standards and digital object transformation and re purposing To be successful in this role you will be: Organized Possess a positive attitude Problem solver Resourceful Team player Employee Group: United Steelworkers (USW) Appointment Type: Budget - Continuing Schedule: Full-time Pay Scale Group and Hiring Rate: USW Pay Band 12 -- $69,730 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $89,172.
