Duties:

UMD/ESSIC has an opening for a one-year position (possibly longer, pending 
funding) as Faculty Assistant to work within NOAA’s National Centers for 
Environmental Information to steward environmental data at NOAA Headquarters in 
Silver Spring, MD.  The NCEI mission is to acquire, preserve, disseminate and 
insure the long-term utility of environmental data records on behalf of the 
nation.  The records include in situ oceanographic data from NOAA, other US 
Federal agencies, other government and international agencies, academia and 
NGOs. 

Duties for this position will include the scientific data stewardship of 
in-situ environmental data collected aboard ocean going research vessels and 
aircraft and the development and recommendation of new techniques to manage 
specific environmental data.  Data collections may be in the form of digital 
records in various formats including video data. Legacy data collections may be 
in the form of analog records and on various media such as tapes, mini-DVs or 
others depending on the age of collection.  The incumbent will be someone who 
appreciates and enjoys the technical challenges of planning for and handling 
various types of environmental data. The position requires a working knowledge 
of the principles for creating and maintaining geospatial metadata and basics 
of archival and records management practices.  Other activities include 
participation in conferences, workshops, and meetings to present results to the 
scientific community. Travel requirements are expected to be 1-2 weeks per year



Qualifications:

The qualified candidate should have a Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in 
Data Curation or Data Sciences, Library and Information Sciences, Environmental 
Science(s), Computer Science, or Information Technology.  An advanced degree in 
a field with archival and/or records management requirements, such as an MLS or 
MLIS is desirable.  In addition the candidate should be able to show at least 
one year experience acting in a data or information management capacity.  Other 
distinguishing skills and abilities include (a) Familiarity with metadata and 
metadata standards (FGDC/ISO 19115) (b) Experience and skills with computer 
systems and operating system environments (e.g., Windows, Linux, file creation, 
file movement, etc.) (c)  Ability to effectively communicate with program and 
project managers, scientists and data providers (d)  Experience using file 
management commands in the Linux operating system and some experience using one 
or more of the following software packages: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Perl, Python, R, 
or other programming language is desirable. (e)  Familiarity with the common 
data model format netCDF, the markup language XML, and associated tools is 
desirable (f) Familiarity with video formats, codecs, resolutions and tools to 
work with them.

Citizenship:  U.S. citizenship desired
