Our Digital World is looking for a Digital Library Developer Intern. Sorry, friends south of the border . . . please note the requirement to be legally eligible to work in Canada & >=30. http://bit.ly/2fRXGIX ---- OurDigitalWorld (ODW) is seeking a Digital Library Developer for a paid internship opportunity (500 hours, full-time). The intern will be assisting on a pilot project, Phase 2 (ODW, in collaboration with the British Columbia Provincial Digital Library Initiative) to develop and test solutions for a digital library platform, mainly the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) platform, for use initially in Ontario and BC. Working in a collaborative, virtual environment the intern will help assess, create and modify tools, scripts and applications for access to digital cultural heritage collections from multiple jurisdictions. Background: OurDigitalWorld already provides access via an online portal (ourontario.ca) to the digital collections of more than 200 libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, galleries, and other content providers across Ontario. The next iteration is to move to an open source and community supported platform. The intern will work with the project team to to understand the requirements and develop solutions for existing systems using DPLA technologies. Duties include: ● Define and actively participate in github-based workflows for software development and customization ● Liaison with project partners (Slack channel, F2F meetings, etc.) ● Create local technical documentation ● Code testing routines and strategies ● Deploy applications using configuration management tools ● Harvest metadata from a variety of institutions ● Define metadata mappings and workflows ● Customize a frontend application to display harvested metadata Required Skills and Abilities: ● Experience with web development using HTML,CSS, Javascript, and/or PHP ● Experience with application development in Ruby, or Python ● Familiarity with the Ruby on Rails stack or similar technology stacks ● Familiarity with indexing technologies such as Solr ● Familiarity with APIs ● Knowledge of server deployment and administration an asset ● Ability to quickly learn and use new technologies ● Demonstrated aptitude for problem-solving, ● Strong organizational and interpersonal skills ● Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team-based environment ● Ability to write clear technical documentation ● Excellent written and verbal communication skills ● Excellent analytical and organizational skills ● Enthusiasm for open source software. This position is funded through the Youth Internship Program of the Government of Canada with a salary of $22/hr. To be eligible you must: ● Be 30 years of age or younger ● Have attended some or all post-secondary education ● Be eligible for employment in Canada: must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
