Just asking for the sharedFontPanel isn’t enough. You still need to show it using -makeKeyAndOrderFront:, and as an NSPanel subclass, you might also need to -setWorksWhenModal:YES and -setBecomesKeyOnlyIfNeeded:YES. By the way Apple, the Font Panel sucks.
