I'm about 90% of the way through creating my first view-based source list from scratch, without bindings, and with lots of custom behaviors. I can't answer your question directly because the topic is too large. All I can say from my experience is that it requires a lot of trial-and-error (as an AppleScripter, you're good at that), and close study of the sample code pays big dividends.
