Can you describe what Font Book lacks of your requirements?
It has user groups, smart groups, full strikes, sample text (both in-font and
user-entered), activation/deactivation, render-without-installing, tooltips for
Unicode point/name or non-Unicode glyph number.
It's at least a start on an iPhoto for fonts, but there's always more one could
do.
