Bit more than cargo-cult. I did some debugging to find out where the contentView is set, distilled it down to a reasonably simple case and filed it about 6 months ago. Reasonably simple was a UICollectionView with a number of elements you can add to and is allowed to rotate. Within a couple of rotations, landscape to portrait (in the case of a vertically scrolling view), the content size is set the correct size and then, at the very end of autolayout, it gets reset to the previous landscape size. I've had this in 3 separate projects both in collection and table views. The collection view manages still to layout as if the content size were correct, but you miss the bottom piece of content and the scrollview can scroll horizontally. If bugreporter were up I'd go see if the status is updated, haven't seen a closed message so it's likely still open.
