Any chance that what you are referring to as the rootViewController is actually a child of a UINavigationController or UITabBarController? If that's the case, you will need to subclass UINavigationController or UITabBarController override its supportedInterfaceOrientations (+ itsshouldAutorotate in case you need to support iOS < 6) because that's where the magic happens.
