Well, it appears to a NSOutlineView bug. I made a sample project that has two identical source list views, created and configured identically, and they both show this defective behavior. If I then turn off "source list highlighting" (and nothing else) in IB for one of the outline views, the behavior is suddenly correct in that outline view only. Anyway, this gave me a simple test project, now bug-reported as #13178419.
