I think the problem isn't so much the "muscle memory" of manually saving, it's 
the fact that NOT saving has been (and still is, even for a new user) a 
deliberate decision. It's an action in itself, one that is very efficient 
because it requires NO STEPS. Of course an action by doing nothing is not 
something that any software can detect, which is why I think the autosave model 
is so frustrating. It assumes that all actions are affirmative actions that it 
can detect, and there can be no such thing as a deliberate action that involves 
doing nothing.

It's a broader issue than the case of saving, since humans very often act 
positively by doing nothing in all sorts of situations. The design of autosave 
denies this possibility, which is why it's so annoying - it forces a person to 
think like a computer.

If doing nothing is no longer allowed as a positive action, all of the 
necessary workarounds must be less efficient, because they all involve some 
steps.
