One note: Many controls on the Mac are NSCell-based NSControls, in which case you generally want to override the drawBezelWithFrame:inView, drawWithFrame:inView: etc. methods. Also, I think scrollers were also a bit iffy when used as overlay scrollers: I think drawRect: wasn't called and instead the drawKnob method was called directly, or something like that. It's been a while. But I must have had a bad day doing NSScroller, because I later found out simpler ways of doing some things, so don't quote me on this and ignore it if it works for you.
