You did not provide a code snippet showing how the string is used, but you mentioned using -[NSString stringWithFormat:]. My guess would be that fullString is being interpreted somewhere as a format string, where the % is interpreted as a format directive/specifier. %o is unsigned 32-bit integer (unsigned int), printed in octal, which matches what you're reporting as the results.
