So here we are two years after the release of Snow Leopard and the documentation, http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Cocoa/Reference/Foundation/Classes/NSAppleScript_Class/Reference/Reference.html still says, in a blue box for emphasis, "Important: You should access NSAppleScript only from the main thread."
