Lots of things are still documented that aren't used anymore. :) There
may have been a time since Mac OS X 10.0 that framework versions were
used, but I can't think of any examples. They are certainly not used
today.

Don't think so, but I might be wrong.

I'm pretty sure the function that gets used for this is
CFGetExecutableLinkedLibraryVersion, implemented here:
http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/CF/CF-550/CFUtilities.c
