Doing that works, it just strikes me as a hack. But I guess it's what I'll have 
to go with. Thanks!

The exact line I wrote is:

        [self.popoverButtonItem.target performSelector: 
self.popoverButtonItem.action withObject: self.popoverButtonItem];
