Thanks for all the answers and suggestions. Lee Ann has explained the exact reason why I wanted to be able to notify my widget that the user has logged in. In other words, it is a simple widget, but when a special events, it plays a chime, so I can press F12 to see what's happened.
But thanks anyway. I will probably write something other than a widget.
