You need a PSC because MOMs are attached to a PSC. The MOC can't get a MOM without a PSC. Just because you don't plan on persisting your store doesn't mean you don't need a PSC. Each MOC has an independent view of reality, and the PSC is where all the MOCs meet to sort it out. If you were following the tutorial you linked to, the default template code would have set up your MOC with a PSC. The default template's app delegate has the methods -managedObjectModel and -persistentStoreCoordinator that do exactly that. Since you're not actually following the tutorial, you missed that.
