I tried drawing with a shadow, and while it produces an interesting effect in my UI, it doesn't improve the smoothing of the text.

As an experiment I filled the context with white before drawing any text and that does the trick. The text looks identical to what appears in the Finder and elsewhere.

So at least now I know. Thanks for the great information.
