Thanks. The drag method works. For the benefit of anyone who encounters this issue and is reading these posts: I had tried drag before but was not patient enough. At least on my two computers (a 2008 MBP and a 2009 imac) you need to click and hold the mouse button down for at least a full two seconds before you are able to initiate the drag.
