That's probably your best bet. You can probably find the source to an implementation of vasprintf and modify it to take %@, with the special semantics you desire. You could probably find Apple's version on opensource.apple.com and use that. Complying with the APSL doesn't look too onerous. Trying to comply with *all* of the various modifiers allowed by printf doesn't seem too practical, especially when you get into esoteric stuff like length modifiers and argument position indicators.
