What you've missed is that this is something Carbon can do that Cocoa cannot. :( If you launch IB and create a new Carbon window, add a Box, then you can change its type to 'popup'. You could maybe make a custom NSView that uses HITheme APIs to draw. Perhaps HIThemeDrawGroupBox() is the right one...
