You can't break toll free bridging.
The NSObject and CF type collaborate to route objects and function calls 
appropriately. 

The following works for me:

NSString *name = NSMakeCollectable(SCDynamicStoreCopyLocalHostName(NULL));

You may have retain issues with your logging call.
