It's a documentation bug. Consulting the actual header file, you'll find:

> // returns the number of objects a fetch request would have returned if it 
> had been passed to -executeFetchRequest:error:.   If an error occurred during

> - (NSUInteger) countForFetchRequest: (NSFetchRequest *)request error: 
> (NSError **)error;    

which clears up the question.
