You need to dissociate drawing from data collection. Your view's
implementation of -drawRect: should simply draw whatever the current
state is. It might be something as simple as this:

- (void)drawRect:(NSRect)dirtyRect {
  for (DataPoint *p in [modelObject dataPoints])
    [self drawDataPoint:p];
}
