This is the traditional stance of this list, but I would take such advice with a grain of salt. I often wonder what Apple's apps (Time Machine, Front Row, iMovie, iDVD, 10.6 Quicktime Player, etc.) would look like if Apple came to this list for design advice. Granted, if you're making Calculator 3000 or another TextEdit, it's probably best to stick to the presets. But it's Apple's UI tinkering that brings us new OS-supported widgets and controls, and it's what keeps the HIG fresh.
