Did you check what Apple themselves do within IODisplayLib.c (IOKitUser / graphics.subproj) ? http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/IOKitUser/IOKitUser-514.8.1/graphics.subproj/IODisplayLib.c Check the function named "GenerateProductName"...
