I don't know about git, but with Subversion one can install a post-commit hook that runs the hot-backup.py script to backup your entire repository after every commit. On my Linux box I have a cron job that copies that backup from my internal drive to an external one. Once a week I swap that external drive with one that I keep in a bank safe deposit back.
