I haven't used Twisted, but it's pretty powerful. On the downside, I believe that means it's big. It might be a lot of code to ship with your app (unless it's already in the OS?) and it might use more memory than you'd like. Of course you should take actual measurements before trusting anything I say :) A similar but probably-smaller solution would be Ruby's Mongrel server.
