What do you mean, "will work"? That the weather service will accept it? Does the service respond that the zip code isn't usable, for whatever reason? Otherwise, searching 42k+ will be very quick if you put it into a sqllite database. But then you will have to maintain the database, continually update it, and possibly correct it.
