How about this?

NSInteger index = [myOutlineView rowForItem:itemToSelect];
NSIndexSet * indexSet = [NSIndexSet indexSetWithIndex:index];
[myOutlineView selectRowIndexes:indexSet byExtendingSelection:NO];
