In seriousness, yes, very valid point. There are, however, no good localized (localised?) "phone number formatters" built into the system so rolling your own is no small task. If you can't find a good open source solution, it's probably best to either turn off the formatter when not in "US" mode, or just don't force formatting at all.

And even if you're going to be smart about it and format them for people in the U.S., remember that English != United States, and that even U.S. users might have international numbers or various other types of special numbers (internal PBX numbers, numbers with control strings, #s, *s and so on, or even alphanumeric "numbers" if their phone system supports them).
