Audio apps do seem to plough their own furrow when it come to UI though - it's not necessarily going to generalise.
But why not just customise the appearance so it looks sufficiently different from a standard text field? Then at least users won't be so surprised when it behaves differently. You could make it look like a rotary knob for example, with the number shown in the centre.
