Because that is how code posted in the archives says to do it. If I use NSImageCell or NSTextFieldCell (which I've tried), the icons never show up. Those work for NSTableView icons but not NSOutlineView icons.

NSBrowserCell probably knows nothing about table view highlighting styles, because its intended use is inside an NSMatrix within an NSBrowser. An image-and-text cell is not hard to create.
