I would really like to understand the difference in approach between these two methods and also if there are any implications by using or skipping an NSObjectController in between. Would anyone find the time and inclination to explain this to me, please?

In addition to what others have written, there's a section in the documentation that addresses this question directly.

See "Why Are NSControllers Useful?":
http://devworld.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/CocoaBindings/Concepts/WhatAreBindings.html#/ /apple_ref/doc/uid/20002372-177085

So, it is always a question: should I use a controller to manage a relationship to a model object? The issues discussed in that section help you make that judgment. Since it is a judgment call, there's not really a right answer or a single, specific reason why one developer does it one way and another a different way.

Cheers,
Ken
