How can one retrieve the Mime type for a particular file?

The filesystem does not store a file's mime type nor its UTI as part of the file's metadata. The only filesystem metadata available is the file name extension and HFS type. Those are what Launch Services consults to
decide the UTI.

In the case of a bundle, IIRC it may also consult Info.plist, and there's nothing stopping Apple from adding additional mechanisms in future.

Anyway, UTIs are the right way to go, generally speaking, which was the point.

Kind regards,

Alastair.
