I created a standard iPhone application using the built-in wizard and it builds and runs fine.

My question is how do I modify the tab bar at the bottom to not make space for an image. I dont want to use images and I dont see how to adjust the height of the bar so I gain some extra space.

You can't.

You might be able to fake it with a UIToolbar. Put in toolbar items that push new view controllers. The effect wouldn't be quite the same, but you would gain the extra space. There may be some gotchas, but I think it could work.
