And there's a performance consideration as well as a failure consideration. Eventually, in general, there'll be enough concurrent users slinging enough data around the network to make noticeable delays. That applies at the level of overall network bandwidth, and at the level of individual machine network interface bandwidth (which is typically a lot smaller).
