Forgive my butting in but I think you're missing the point.

The Mac doesn't have the concept of "windows inside windows". At all. So you're starting from the premise that you need to do something that can't be done. You can't put a window inside another, so the situation of needing to drag them out or move them around within that window doesn't arise. Your stated reasons for wanting to do this is a circular argument.

Take a step back and figure out a different interface.

Note: MDI is a "solution" to a problem that arose because of a basic design decision in Windows that says everything is a window. On the Mac that isn't the case. A Window is not a view or vice versa.
