Right now our app runs (for better or for worse) on Windows and OS X
with lots of common code between the two. I think ASL might work in

Ah, okay... in that case I suppose ~/Library/Logs is probably best. Definitely look into ASL though, it's not difficult at all to wrap and would probably only take you an hour to do... then it's really easy to search and sort for messages
