That probably isn't the best idea, because it will still function as a disclosure triangle. If you're going to offer the same functionality as a disclosure triangle, just use one. It sounds like the OP's question was how to remove the disclosure triangle altogether, so that he could manually control the visibility of children but not allow the user the same ability.
